How to Turn an Old Android Phone into a Baby Monitor

Most of us have a retired smartphone in a drawer. It already has a camera, a microphone, a screen and Wi-Fi, which is everything a video baby monitor needs. Here is how to put it back to work in about ten minutes.

What you need

• A spare Android phone or tablet to act as the camera. It needs Android 8.0 or newer. It does not need a SIM card, and a scratched screen is fine as long as the camera and microphone work.
• A device to watch on. This can be your everyday phone, a tablet or a computer.
• A Wi-Fi network that both devices join. Leya sends video directly between devices on that network, so it works even when the router has no internet connection.
• A charger and a long cable (2–3 m). A phone streaming video all night must stay plugged in.
• A stand or mount. A small phone tripod, a flexible clamp or a high shelf all work.

Step 1. Prepare the old phone

1. Factory-reset it (optional, but recommended). A clean phone has fewer apps waking it up at night and runs cooler.
2. Update Android and connect the phone to your home Wi-Fi.
3. Silence notifications on the camera phone so a random alert does not wake the baby.
4. Allow unrestricted battery use for the monitor app (usually Settings → Apps → the app → Battery). Some phones otherwise pause background apps to save power.

Step 2. Start the camera and pair a monitor

Step 3. Place the camera correctly

Where you put the phone matters more than which phone you use.

• Distance: keep the phone and especially its cable well out of the baby's reach, at least a metre (about 3 feet) from the crib. A cord must never hang near the crib.
• Angle: mount the phone higher than the mattress and point it down, so the whole crib is in view. Leya remembers zoom and rotation separately for each camera.
• Light: do not point the camera at a window, because backlight turns the picture into a silhouette. Phones have no infrared night vision. Leya can raise camera sensitivity and switch on the flashlight, and a dim night light in the room helps any phone camera.
• Wi-Fi signal: if the nursery is far from the router, check the picture in the evening before bedtime, not at 2 a.m.

Step 4. Keep it running all night

• Keep it plugged in. Video streaming drains a battery in a few hours.
• Let it breathe. Do not put the phone on a blanket or in direct sun, and remove a thick case. Phones slow down or shut off when they overheat.
• Dim the screen. Screen dimming reduces heat and keeps the nursery dark.
• Do a test night. Watch from another room for 20–30 minutes and check the picture, the sound and the delay before you rely on it.
