Baby Monitor Apps Without the Cloud: Why Local Wi-Fi Keeps Your Nursery Private

A camera pointed at a sleeping child may be the most private video in your home. So before choosing a baby monitor app, it is worth asking one simple question: where does that video go?

Two ways a monitor app can work

1. Through the cloud. Camera → internet → company server → internet → your phone. Most "watch from anywhere" apps and smart cameras work this way. It is convenient, because you can check the nursery from work. But your video passes through, and is sometimes stored on, someone else's computers. It is protected by that company's security practices and privacy policy, and usually by an online account password.

2. Local Wi-Fi only. Camera → your router → your phone. The stream stays inside your home network. 1. Secure your Wi-Fi. Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a strong password, and change the router's admin password from the default.
2. Keep everything updated: router firmware, phone software and the monitor app.
3. Change default passwords on any dedicated camera straight away.
4. Find out where video is stored. If the privacy policy mentions cloud recording, check how long it is kept and how to delete it.
5. Turn off remote access you do not use. Many cameras enable it by default.
6. Reset a hand-me-down phone before turning it into a camera, so it does not carry old accounts and apps.
